Foreclosure Prevention Resources

A clerk of court may be able to delay the foreclosure process for up to 60 days as needed. The delay of the foreclosure hearing will provide the homeowner more time to work out a payment plan with the bank, mortgage servicer, or lender.   1. Contact the Utility Company: If you anticipate you won’t be able to pay your bill, reach out to the utility company as soon as possible. Most utility companies will allow you to fall behind 2-3 payments before shut off as long as you tell them when you can pay it. For example, if you plan on utilizing a resource in this guide, tell them when you’ll be approved for help. See your bill or payment portal for contact information. Many utility companies offer discounted rates and payment plans to elderly and low-income people. Ask your utility company today.
  2. Programs that average bills throughout the year: We use different amounts of energy depending on the season. Sometimes we fall behind on our energy bills during periods when we use a lot of energy and incur high bills, like during summer in hot, humid North Carolina. Many energy utilities offer programs that average your periods of high and low usage and allow you to pay one set monthly payment all year long. This way, you can budget for one fixed price. Please call your utility company and ask if they offer this program.
